A bedroom in Horst, Limburg, may seem an unlikely starting point for an international DJ career. For Mats van Biljouw, it was exactly that.
Three years ago, the 23-year-old producer was making tracks at home and sharing them with a small circle of friends. Today, he performs around the world as KLOFAMA, appearing on major hardtechno stages and playing to thousands of people. His rise has been remarkably fast, making him one of the most notable artists within a new generation of hardtechno.
The short documentary I AM: KLOFAMA, produced by CULT., follows Mats during the year in which that rise reaches an entirely new level. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film offers an intimate portrait of an artist whose public career is expanding faster than ever—and a young man trying to remain connected to his private self.

The reality behind the breakthrough
From the outside, KLOFAMA’s career appears to be moving in one direction: forward. His schedule is filled with international travel, major performances and increasingly large audiences. Airports, hotel rooms, backstage areas and festival grounds have become familiar parts of his everyday life.
The documentary captures that momentum, but it also looks at what exists beyond the visible success. Between performances, Mats returns to Horst, where he grew up and where his story began. His childhood home offers a sharp contrast to the world of international stages.
There, he is not surrounded by thousands of people or defined by a performance. He is simply Mats—at home with his family, among longtime friends and in the environment that helped shape him. The film uses these moments to explore the distance between his rapidly growing artist identity and the person he has always been.

Who is Mats without the stage?
At the centre of I AM: KLOFAMA is a question that reaches beyond music: who are you when the role everyone recognises comes to an end?
For Mats, the name KLOFAMA has developed into more than a project. It has become a public identity known by an expanding international audience. But as that identity grows, so does the challenge of keeping it connected to the person behind it.
The documentary asks how someone can remain authentic when thousands of people know a version of them that exists primarily in clubs and at festivals. It explores what international recognition means for a young artist who still comes home to his parents, and how constant travel and performance pressure affect everyday life.
In quieter scenes, the pace changes. Mats sits at the kitchen table, spends time with friends who knew him before his breakthrough and drives through his hometown. These ordinary moments allow the film to reveal a more personal side of his journey. Doubt, loneliness and exhaustion appear alongside ambition, excitement and relief.
Rather than presenting success as either entirely glamorous or entirely overwhelming, I AM: KLOFAMA shows the two sides existing at the same time.
A new generation of hardtechno
KLOFAMA’s development is part of a broader shift within electronic music. New artists can now build international audiences at a speed that would have been difficult to imagine in previous generations. Social media and digital platforms allow music to travel instantly, connecting producers directly with listeners and scenes across the world.
Mats’ journey reflects that changing landscape. His career began with music made in his bedroom, but within only a few years he has performed at major platforms including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also appeared at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
The scale of his audience is further reflected in the success of his all-night-long shows. Over the past two years, he has sold out multiple events in the Netherlands and abroad. These performances demonstrate how quickly he has grown from an emerging producer into an artist capable of attracting large audiences independently and internationally.
His story is therefore not only a personal breakthrough, but also an example of how a new hardtechno generation is building its own path through the music industry.
Growing into the future
What makes I AM: KLOFAMA compelling is that Mats’ story is still unfolding. He is not looking back on a career that has already settled into place. He is experiencing the change as it happens, learning to navigate new opportunities, expectations and responsibilities in real time.
The documentary follows that process without reducing it to a conventional success story. It focuses on the tension between momentum and stability, recognition and privacy, ambition and vulnerability.
At 23, Mats is already performing on international stages. But at home in Horst, he remains connected to the life that existed before KLOFAMA. Between those two worlds, I AM: KLOFAMA finds its central portrait: an artist moving rapidly into the future while trying not to lose sight of where he came from.
The documentary is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
